Below are pictures of our favorite items in our kitchen for working with fresh milled flour.
We have linked to them on Amazon (or a few other websites). We do receive a small commission if you purchase through our link (at no extra cost to you!) Mills
The Nutrimill Harvest is a
great stone grain mill and
mills into a bowl.
The Nutrimill Classic is a
great impact mill and mills
into a closed container.
The Nutrimill Impact Mill is a bit smaller in capacity compared to the others recommended here, but still a great starter mill!
Grain
Research local sources, such as Amish or Mennonite stores. (Such a great way to support small, local businesses too. Something near and dear to our hearts☺️) They usually sell grain in several different size quantities, including large bags (~50 lbs.)
Azure Standard offers a wide variety of organic and natural foods, home, health and beauty products, etc, including several types of grain! They offer local drop-offs (usually once/month) all over the country where you pick up your order that is placed on their website. Check out their website for locations of drop off points.
Palouse on Amazon has been a great source too. It is a bit more expensive than local options, but it ships quickly and right to your door. 🙂
Mixers
We both upgraded from our KitchenAid to an Ankarsrum mixer. It's pricey but it's a workhorse that we know we'll be passing down to our children because it's built so well. We have no regrets and love this thing!
The Nutrimill Artiste is a budget friendly mixer if you're looking to upgrade from something like a KitchenAid and want to be sure it can handle the fresh milled dough.
Grain Storage
While whole grain’s shelf life is indefinite, storing grain properly is super important to minimize the possibility of critters or insects getting into it. Below are our favorite methods of storing our grain.
We use 5 gallon food grade buckets for long term storage. Gamma lids make storing grain in the buckets so easy to access! They very easily screw on and off but are air tight.
This scoop makes refilling your every day grain containers a breeze.
These canisters are great for storing grain for every day use in your pantry to keep pests out! These are the 5.2L size.
We highly recommend using oxygen absorbers in your stored grain. If there are pests present, this will help starve them of oxygen.
Basics
This food scale is a great option. The display panel even extends out for measuring larger items!
This is the silicone baking mat we use when shaping our dough. It rolls up nicely for easy storage.
We highly recommend using a thermometer when temping baked goods to make sure they're done.
These heat resistant gloves are great for having good control with getting hot items in and out of the oven.
We use this oil sprayer every day. It's perfect for spraying your mat, hands, pans, etc and it also has a pour spout on it.
Our mini roller is perfect for rolling out cinnamon rolls, pepperoni rolls, pasta dough…the uses are endless!
This dough whisk is perfect for mixing all kinds of dough. We use it for several different kinds.
A bench knife makes working with dough much easier. Whether you’re cutting pieces off to shape into rolls, or using it to grab a loaf to put into a pan, it’s a great tool in every kitchen.
